Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for our Horror production would be people aged in their mid-teens to their late twenties, this is the mass audience however we believe that it is suitable as a target audience because it fits the audience which have spare money to spend on films and the cinema. We would like to think that our target audience is good for our film as the certificate we targeted our film at was 15 this is to attract the largest possible audience while still using the common horror conventions. The target audience for our production will be both males and females. This helped us attract the largest audience possible to make our films production successful and viewed by a mass audience.

During our research we had to look at 2 different films to compare and take inspiration we looked at the Evil Dead and 28 days later this allowed us to look at their target audience and use that to influence our decision in what our target audience could be.

This is our first inspiration which is the Evil Dead, as this allowed us to examine their target audience and use it to influence our decision for our target audience.

Our second inspiration was 28 days later we also used this as it is a similar ideological themes as the evil dead and we wanted to replicate these as this would encourage the target audience to watch the film.

We think that the main aim for our production was to use our knowledge of our target audience to really attract the production towards the target market as we have aimed our film at the correct target market. We have set out to aim our production towards the mass audience based on the research we had looked at from the Evil Dead and 28 Days Later. This helped us make a better production overall.

Final Shot List

After filming the production and editing the shots we had to update our shot list because we were unable to film some of the shots we wished to and also thought that some shots would look better than others on the day, we also added the tagline ‘You can run but you can’t hide’ this is to show the inevitability of the fate of the protagonist.

Q7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Mariana and I have learnt a lot between the preliminary task and our final product. One of the key things that we have learnt is that planning was vital to make a watchable opening sequence. When it came to our preliminary task, we had some ideas of what shots and storyline we’re going to have however we didn’t have a storyboard and schedule, which took us longer than it would if we had everything planned out. We didn’t have much time to do our preliminary task as it was during our media lesson, so the editing as well as the filming wasn’t the best. This was also our first time using the camera to film.

From our preliminary task to our final product, the technology we have used has advanced. At first, when we were filming short clips to put on our blog, we were using a phone and we weren’t really paying attention to the shots, however, when it came to our preliminary, we have used Canon Legria HF R37, and used shots such as…

This helped us to learn about different techniques that we were supposed to use in our final piece. We had to film out opening sequence twice, as the first time turned out to be a bad quality and the lightning wasn’t good enough. When we filmed for the second time, we have paid attention to the smallest things. We have tried to use as many different shots as possible and we tried not to stop recording, so when editing we can decide which shot works the best with what’s happening on the screen. We have also used more lighting, by leaving the window blinds opened to let the daylight in, and this way, the character can be clearly seen which improves the quality of the final product and makes it look better. From watching various psychological horrors, we have learnt about the typical music that’s used in this genre, and then it was easier for us to find the right sound for our final product. We have used a tripod to film both, our preliminary and the final opening sequence to keep a steady shot and to make it look more professional. We have used iMovie and Movie Maker to edit our opening sequence, and this helped us to add the final touches it needed, for example the sound, cutting and unwanted parts.

Our preliminary task had no definitive genre to it. It was only a short clip to help us practice on our filming and acting skills for our final piece. The reason we have chosen psychological horror is because the target audience is teenagers and adults. We have taken inspiration from “The Orphan” and “The Silent House”, and some of the things happening in our opening sequence are influenced by these two psychological horrors.

Overall, we have done a lot of research on psychological horror to find out what the typical conventions are, but also what sort of mise-en-scene is used in this genre and we have watched a couple of psychological horrors to be able to see what storyline they have and to be able to make up our own one. We have also spent more time on our opening sequence and did a lot more planning before we actually started filming. Mariana and I have been looking at other students’ work, for example other psychological horror opening sequences and this gave us an idea of what these look like. We could also find out the grade these people got for their productions, therefore we could choose what grade we are aiming for.

I think we have gained a lot of experience during this project, not only in filming but also in editing, and we have understood that sound for example is very important in horrors, as it adds the right atmosphere to it. I think I have learnt a lot but I believe there’s many things I could improve on and still could learn.

Q6: What have you learnt technologies from the process of constructing this product?

By filming the preliminary task and then the opening sequence, I have learned how to recreate a scene, to develop a preliminary task that taught me about having the flow within the sequence but also making off the final product, which we have called “Unknown”.

We have used Canon Legria HF R37 to film a sequence and a tripod to keep a steady shot. As we haven’t used a camera like this before, we had to research into it, and watch short clips of how to use a camera. We also had a chance to film short clips ourselves, to get used to using this camera. We understood different camera shots and we have found out how to save time when doing the editing.

As we have used equipment from school such as the advanced camera, we were able to film more professionally, for example when using the tripod so the shot wouldn’t be wobbly, and this made the quality of our sequence better and engaged the audience into our film, making them feel interested at the same time.

However, we did have some problems when filming, as we had to move my furniture around the room to get the best shots we could, and this took us more time to film our work. We also didn’t fully know how to work the camera properly, so the lens closed itself, and we had to figure out how we open it up and it took us about 20 minutes to sort it out. Additionally, we didn’t get high quality footage because we didn’t use professional lightning, but we had to sort the window blinds, so they wouldn’t let too much light in, but at the same time so it wouldn’t be completely dark.

To edit our sequence, Mariana has used both iMovie and Movie Maker. She has gone onto YouTube to find some tutorials on how to use these programs to get a good effect. I have been looking at tutorials on how to film using that specific camera that our school has provided for us.

We had problems with adding music to the sequence in iMovie, Mariana had to save the project and open it up in Movie Maker which was easier to add music.
