Evaluation 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Mast Head

prelim head.fw uncut title.fw

The mast head on my preliminary task was in a bubbly font, which I did still use on my magazine, however I did not think it was suitable for my main magazines mast head. I decided to use a bold and modern font for my magazine. I decided that I wanted to do this because by having the bold font it looked more modern and attracted peoples attention to look at it. Additionally, the layout that I used for my preliminary I did not think was suitable for my main magazine. This is because by having the font bold and going across the whole page, it made my magazine fit into the market that I put it in. After looking at magazines such as Billboard and Vibe, I could see that their mastheads were similar and also used a bold font. The colour I used for my mast head is white on both. After using the white on a blue background, I could see that it stood out a lot and was easily readable, therefore I decided to mirror the white font on a bright coloured background, making it stand out from the background. The preliminary mast head is still spread across the page, however the writing is on different levels. This is because the actual name of the preliminary magazines name is a lot longer than my main magazine, however if I decided to have a longer name for my main magazine because this layout did not look professional or suitable for my target audience.

Front Cover Image

front airbrush Prelim.fw

On my magazines front cover, my model is posing for the picture with her hand on her hip, where as in my preliminary magazine the image is candid and there is nothing professional about it. It is a very natural image. I decided that I wanted my model to be posing in my magazine because after looking at the preliminary image, it did not look as professional as I would have liked it to be. Additionally the front cover on my preliminary magazine is cluttered and has a lot going on, on the page. As you can see on my main magazine there is not a lot going on, the page is fairly spaced out and there is not too much going on that may put you off reading. In contrast you can see on my preliminary task there is a lot of text put in to fill up space and there is a lot of random pictures that have been included all over. It does not look very professional for my target audience, however because it is aimed at a school audience ranging from the ages of 11-18, it would suit them.

Contents Page

final contents prelim con.fw

My contents page are nothing alike. I created my contents page for my preliminary task based around a younger target audience that are not interested in the things I have included in my main magazine. The page looks really bare and there are just random images that are included on it to fill up some space. My main magazines layout is a lot more compact, however not cluttered. I have many images included on my main magazine because this makes the reader want to read the magazine more as they can see the whole magazine is not text heavy, where as the contents page for my preliminary task is really bare and too spaced out. However I decided to take the idea from my preliminary to include a bit more description based around the stories that are included.

Evaluation 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Equipment

Camera
When taking the picture is used a Nikon camera because the quality of it was better than using a standard camera. I managed to use it to focus on the main feature I wanted on my model, as well as have the right settings on the camera. I used different settings on the camera such as how to shoot a portrait of someone as well as how I would take a close-up of a non-moving image. The camera allowed me to use a flash and no flash, I decided not to use a flash because the lights that I was using were already extremely bright and made my models face light up along with her main features. I did not use a tripod for the camera because I wanted to get lots of different angles, so I used it handheld.

This is the camera that I used, it is called the Nikon DSLR.

Laptop
I used a standard Toshiba laptop allowing me to upload all of the images that I took. I also used the software downloaded onto the laptop to create my magazine.

Publisher
I used publisher to make my magazine and put everything where it needed to be. This allowed me to arrange my magazine in however I wanted to. It allowed me to re-size images and text size making it fit on completely with the page. Publisher also allowed me to include the text on my double page spread. I did not use font space as it would have not looked correct using fonts off of a website, which is why I used a publisher font and made the text go into columns.

Font Space
I used font space in order for me to create the fonts that I wanted to go on my magazine. There were a large variety of different fonts that I could have used, however I decided that I wanted to stick to sans-serif fonts because they were the ones that looked most modern.

Fireworks
I used fireworks because it allowed me to edit my images. When I took the pictures I had to remove the white background for me to post them on my magazine. I used the magic wand tool to allow me to remove this background. When I was doing this, parts of the models hair was being cropped out, this then meant I had to use a tool in order for me to match her hair colour and try and redraw her hair on to it in order for it to look correct.

Publishing Software
The presentation software that I used was SlideShare and Prezi. These allowed me to show my research, planning and evaluations. It looks more professional rather than having to post my information plainly onto a wordpress post. It shows my creativity through the use of presentation software.

Evaluation 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for my magazine is for the age between 16-30. It is more so aimed at the younger generation because they are more interested in fashion and make-up. I think that this a suitable age rage for my magazine because people above the age of 30 stereotypically do not have the time to read magazines, where as a younger target audience has more time of their hands and are more able to read into the stories that are included within the magazine. You can tell that my magazine is not targeted towards a younger target audience. This is because I have used a simple but effective layout for my front cover, contents page and double page spread. There is no clutter or mess and it looks like it should be aimed towards a more advanced target audience, rather than just at a typical young girl. I still have decided to mainly stick with a female target audience because most females are stereotypically interested in reading about fashion and make-up, as well as reading into stories about pop stars. Most magazines idolise women who have already made themselves famous, where as I decided it would be a good idea to include stories about not only pop-stars, fashion and music, but also about real life. It is interesting to get involved with the stories that can be put in to magazines and rather than following the cliché of a standard pop magazine, I decided to make my readers and audience more involved.

Adele King, 19.

Adele is someone who I would aim my magazine at. She is young still however is mature enough to understand why my magazine has been laid out in a specific way, rather than just cluttered all over the page. Adele was included in my survey which I included a transcript for. She gave us a lot of feedback based around the magazine that we had in a normal conversation. She said that it was a good idea to not base the magazine around music completely as t may cause people to get bored of reading it, and thought it was a good idea to include stories based around make-up and fashion as a lot of people get their inspirations from reading into different magazines.

I took her advice on board as she is someone who is included within my target audience and felt that it was extremely important for me to include things that she was saying.

Evie Sandall, 17.

Evie is also someone who my magazine would be aimed towards. She is more aimed towards the younger category however. She was also included in the questions in my survey. She told me that she would like to see what to wear for different seasons as it is like a fashion update, as well as it allows you to get new ideas and join in with the latest trends that are going on. She also said that she would like to read about how pop-stars keep their figure and what diets they go on in order to stay healthy. We decided not to include this in our magazine however. This is because I did not want it to be a magazine that girls were fussing over their weights and comparing themselves to what pop-stars looks like as it is not something that I want to encourage. I decided to include things about fashion and make-up however because there may be things that other people are interested in, and it also encourages people to do different things with their clothes and with their make-up that can make them stand out from the crowd.

Stereotypically men are not interested in reading about fashion and make-up and the female audience is something that I am more familiar with because of my age and gender. I thought I would stick to what I know and include different things about stuff that I find interesting and would like to read about, as well as what other people may find interesting.

Most girls and women from the age of 16-30 will shop in high street shops. This is why the clothes that have been used on the model are not overly expensive and are from shops such as New Look and Primark. This encourages the fact that just to look glamorous and to have nice things, you do not have to pay out much. This would encourage women to wear clothes from high street shops and that they don’t have to spend a lot of money to look nice or fashionable.

Evaluation 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

frontcover

I believe that my magazine represents the social groups that read Billboard magazine. My target audience was aimed at an older target audience because that is what I am more interested in.As you can see, my magazine mirrors some of the key features on these two magazines. I have the bold mast head on the top of the magazine, with my model covering the majority of what is there. This shows I am confident with my magazine. Additionally my title is not over the top and too in your face, much like Billboards. It is a simple white colour in a bold font that stands out on the background.

Moreover, my model is in a stance that I would say makes her look very feminine, as she has her hands on her hips, as well as happy and innocent. The model on the first Billboard magazine has the same stance but is facing forward. I mirrored this idea because I did not want my model to look childish. They are however different. Taylor Swift looks like a strong woman in her image, as she is standing strong with a serious face. I did not want to portray this in my images because that is not linked with the story. The story is written to inform people about how this girl has managed to become so famous. If I were to use a younger target audience for this magazine, I would have included description and possible interview to try and inspire younger girls into following in her footsteps. I have avoided doing this which represents the social groups that would be interested in reading this magazine.

I think that my media work shows a strong gender representation. Rather than having my model pose in a certain way to look submissive or promiscuous, I wanted her to look like an average girl would. She is wearing suitable clothing and has a simple smile on her face. This shows that women are not always used in magazines and images for a man to look at. This magazine represents and average 20 year old girl.

Gender stereotyping plays a big part within media, however I decided to make my model look average so that people who look at this magazine do need feel like they have to compare themselves. I did not want this magazine to be made in a certain way for male satisfaction. I also did not want it to be majorly feminist and for women to be independent and express themselves. I went with being natural and average to represent women who may compare themselves to others or feel like they have someone to impress.
