Audience Profiling

In this post, I am going to talk about which type of audience the ‘Pop’ genre attracts, but the demographics and psychographics of pop. Finally I will talk about the which of the Uses and Gratifications Theories fit into the ‘Pop’ genre.

Firstly I, along with Jordan and James, feel the ‘Pop’ genre definitely has a ‘Mass Audience’ as pop itself is a type of music liked by lots of people in a reasonably large age bracket.  The way pop magazines communicate with their audience is with diversified media technologies so this automatically draws people with different interests, to a pop magazine.


In terms of the Demographics, the audience of a pop magazine would stereotypically be young, unemployed and semi-skilled therefore the demographics range I would place the target audience in is from C1 to E simply because there are potentially lots of different types of people who like pop.  For example, someone in the C1 category could be a young nurse who still enjoy the nature of pop and particularly pop music however, someone in the E category could be a student who is also unemployed who again likes pop music.


This shows the specifically the type of people who like pop music or, based on their personality, would probably like pop music.  The Psychographics I would place the stereotypical pop audience would be the Mainstreamers, Aspirers and Explorers.  Mainstreamers is definitely a category for pop as it is the largest group and the people in it tend to be conventional, sentimental and may seek security.  Secondly, the stereotypical pop audience would fall into Aspirers because these people are orientated to image and appearance and fashion but a typically younger people.  The group Explorers, almost says in the name that they look to discover new things, want to be individual and are again younger people like students.

Uses and Gratifications Theory:

In my opinion, the a typical pop audience has all four Uses and Gratifications Theories – Identity, Educate, Entertain and Social Interaction.  Firstly, Identity applies because a pop audience will be able to recognise the product which is the pop magazine and the younger generation, which are attracted to pop, do aspire to be someone else.  The audience can be educated as they have the ability to acquire information, knowledge and gain understanding from the magazine.  Thirdly, the pop genre obviously entertains as there are funny moments and articles included throughout most pop magazines and the audience are also able to ‘escape’ from worries in life temporarily.  Finally, the ways a pop magazine communicates with the audience allows Social Interaction between the audience and the magazine largely because of the topic of conversation e.g. The X Factor.
